Hiking the Buffalo River

Over the past month I have had the chance to do some exploring around the Buffalo River with my friend Britt.

Our first expedition was to Hemmed-In Hollow Falls. It was a 5 mile hike round trip, but it took over half a day because the trail descends over 1000 feet, so coming out you essentially are walking up a rugged and steep flight of stairs for 2.5 miles. I could hardly move my legs the next day. The Falls are pretty amazing, even though the water wasn't flowing very hard the day we went. This is the biggest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachian Mountains, an impressive 209 feet.

Yesterday we went to "Big Bluff," the tallest bluff on the river at over 500 feet. It is the most spectacular and majestic view in Arkansas. We also followed the trail on down to the river, which was flowing really strong due to all the rain we have had lately. I thought that our hike was going to be about 6 miles, but it turned out that it was 6 miles one way, so we unwittingly hiked 12 miles yesterday. I don't think I could have done it if I knew it was going to be 12 miles going into it.
